Leadership can be demanding and, at times, deeply isolating. For leaders in Australia’s social impact sector, the decisions are often complex, the resources constrained and the needs of the communities they serve increasingly urgent.

In these moments, the value of a trusted mentor can be profound.

A mentor does not arrive with all the answers. Instead, they create the space for a leader to pause, think openly and see a situation differently. They ask the honest question. Offer another perspective. Share the benefit of their own experience without prescribing the path ahead.

Most importantly, they help leaders find confidence in their own judgement.

This year’s National Mentor Appreciation Day campaign, “The conversations that shape us,” celebrates these moments of connection. They may be conversations that challenge an assumption, bring clarity to a difficult decision or remind someone of what they are capable of. Sometimes their significance is understood immediately. At other times, their influence becomes apparent only much later.

The stories shared by Kilfinan mentees show that the impact of mentoring extends well beyond professional advice. Mentors help leaders feel heard, supported and less alone. They help them recognise their strengths, trust their instincts and lead with greater courage and authenticity.

That impact travels outward. When a leader grows in confidence, they are better equipped to support their people, strengthen their organisation and serve their community. One trusted conversation can influence many more.

For our mentors, this contribution is an extraordinary act of generosity. They share not only their knowledge, but also their time, attention, curiosity and belief in another person’s potential. Often, their influence reaches much further than they ever realise.

On National Mentor Appreciation Day, we invite everyone who has benefited from mentoring to pause and acknowledge the person who helped shape them.

Tell them about the conversation you still remember. The question that stayed with you. The perspective that helped you move forward. Or simply say what you may not yet have had the opportunity to say: thank you.

We also recognise the two remarkable women who made this exchange of wisdom, experience and encouragement possible through Kilfinan Australia: Rosemary Grieve AM and the late Marion Webster AO. Their belief in the power of mentoring continues through every connection made and every conversation shared.

To every Kilfinan mentor: thank you. Your contribution strengthens leaders, organisations and communities across Australia, one conversation at a time.
