Reflecting on transformative mentorship
When I reflect on my journey as CEO of the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, one person stands out as having profoundly shaped my growth and confidence: Greg Ridder AM. His mentorship was transformative, providing the foundation upon which I built my leadership capabilities during some of the most challenging and rewarding years of my career.
Greg, Chair of Kogan.com, possessed an extraordinary ability to see potential where others might see uncertainty. He didn’t simply offer advice; he created space for authentic dialogue about the complexities of leading an organisation dedicated to protecting children from violence and bullying. Through countless conversations, he helped me understand that effective leadership wasn’t about having all the answers—it was about asking thoughtful questions, listening with intention, and empowering others to achieve their best work.
His insights fundamentally changed how I approached strategic thinking and decision-making. Greg taught me that vulnerability could be a strength in leadership, and that leading with compassion didn’t diminish authority but rather enhanced it. This wisdom proved invaluable when navigating difficult decisions that affected both our team and the young people we served.
Perhaps most importantly, Greg believed in my abilities even when I questioned them myself. His unwavering confidence became a source of strength during pivotal moments, enabling me to take bold steps when our mission demanded courage. The leadership confidence I developed under his guidance created lasting impacts that extended far beyond my personal growth – it strengthened the Foundation’s capacity to serve vulnerable children across Australia.
Greg investment in my development represented more than mentorship; it was a gift that continues to benefit every young person our organisation supports.
